Charles Parrett was born in Islington, London, a glass beveller by trade, and enlisted for the 10th Hussars at Hounslow in March 1897. He served in South Africa from November 1899 to April 1902, his papers confirming entitlement to the Queen’s Medal with 6 clasps, Natal not confirmed, and the King’s Medal with 2 clasps. He was posted to the 7th Hussars in December 1903 and transferred to the Army Reserve the following March, but re-engaged in December 1908 and again in October 1912. He was mobilized at Bristol on 6 August 1914 and posted the following day to the Royal Horse Guards, with whom he landed in France on 7 October 1914. He was wounded on 30 October 1914 by a gun shot in the left hand, and was deprived of his Lance stripe for ‘Making an improper reply to his superior officer’ whilst convalescing at Rouen in November 1914. He suffered from Rheumatic Fever in April 1915, was posted to the 3rd Hussars in May 1918, and was demobilized in February 1919. Sold with copy service papers and Medal Index Card.
