John King Patrick Dooner joined the Nvay as a Naval Cadet in July 1889, became Midshipman in April 1892, Sub-Lieutenant in November 1895, and Lieutenant in April 1898. He served during the South African war in
Forte on the Delagoa Bay blockade, and later with the Naval Brigade from Terrible, with two 12-pounder guns; landed with the Naval Brigade from Magicienne and Terpsichore during the operations against the Ogaden Somalis in 1900 and 1901; served with Terpsichore’s brigade at Lambert’s Bay, Cape Colony, 1901; employed slave cruising off Zanzibar, April 1902. Retired 12 February 1904.
