Captain John Reginald Philpott, M.C., 63 Squadron, Royal Flying Corps, died as a prisoner of war in Iraq on 15 January 1918, aged 24 years. He won his M.C. in France when flying with 12 Squadron and went out to Mesopotamia with 63 Squadron in August 1917. The squadron made their first reconnaissance on the 25th September, and both machines involved were lost. The RE8 flown by Captain Philpott was shot down in a combat with a Halberstadt over Tekrit and he was captured together with his observer, Lieutenant L. N. Baillon.
