Thomas George Upton was born at Bow, London, and enlisted into the 4th Hussars at Dublin on 4 September 1890, aged 18. He was imprisoned in June 1892 for drunkenness, and transferred to the 7th Hussars the following August. In August 1898 he was tried by General Court Martial for Mutiny, found guilty and sentenced to 3 years penal servitude, but this was subsequently commuted to 6 months imprisonment with hard labour. He was discharged to Army Reserve in July 1898, but recalled to Army service in December 1899, and posted to the 14th Hussars. He served in South Africa from February to December 1900, and was discharged as medically unfit on 6 August 1901. The medal roll shows entitlement to clasps for Cape Colony, Orange Free State, and Belfast only. Sold with copy service papers and medal roll.
