William Jones entered the Navy on 8 June, 1805, as a Volunteer on board the Captain 74, and assisted at the capture of the French frigate La Président of 44 guns on 27 September 1806. In the same ship he was present in 1807 at the reduction of Copenhagen and Madeira, and served at the taking of Martinique in 1809. In December of that year he removed to the Dictator 64 and was for sixteen months employed on the Baltic and Leith stations, after which he served off the coasts of France and Spain, including the operations at St Sebastian, among the Western Islands, and in North America, as Midshipman, in the Sceptre 74, Constant gun-brig, and Tonnant 80, flag-ship of Hon. Sir Alexander Cochrane. He was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 15 February 1815, and subsequently saw some service in the Coast Guard as Supernumerary Lieutenant.
