1862 was the year of the “Great Train Chase” that took place in Georgia. During the American Civil War, a band of Union spies infiltrated the deep South on a mission to destroy vital railway links, they stole a locomotive called the “General” and were chased across the south, eventually captured, eight of the band were hanged, the rest paroled, who were later decorated by President Lincoln. The “General“ was owned by the Western and Atlantic Railroad.
