Henri Philippe Pétain (1856-1951), the ‘hero of the Battle of Verdun’, 1916; C-in-C French army, 1917; Marshal of France, 1918; Prime Minister of France and chief-of-state of the Vichy government, 1940; convicted for treason and sentenced to death, 1945; sentence commuted to life imprisonment by de Gaulle.
This plaque was executed when the artist was 70 years of age.
