Jean Baptiste Carpeaux (1827-75), versatile sculptor and painter whose work is full of spontaneity, originality and fluid grace; one of his pupils was Rodin. Carpeaux’s best-known work, La Danse, was executed between 1865-9 for Charles Garnier’s Paris Opera House; it is now in the Louvre
