Five: Acting Petty Officer (A.) F. Simcox, Royal Navy, who flew operationally as a T.A.G. in Albacores of No. 820 (F.A.A.) Squadron off Formidable in the Mediterranean and Atlantic 1942-43

1939-45 Star; Atlantic Star; Africa Star; Defence and War Medals 1939-45, mounted as worn, contact marks, otherwise generally very fine (5) £150-200

Simcox commenced training as a Telegraphist Air Gunner (T.A.G.) in the Fleet Air Arm at R.N.A.S. Worthy Down in October 1941 and, having then notched up a few hours in Albacores of 767 and 769 (F.A.A.) Squadrons at Condor, Arbroath, he joined No. 820 Squadron in the carrier Formidable in July 1942. And he remained similarly employed until the end of 1943, his accompanying Flying Log Book bearing numerous entries for anti-submarine and and anti-shipping patrols in the Squadron’s Albacores in the Mediterranean and, from October 1943, one or two patrols on the Atlantic and Arctic run.

Simcox, who had been advanced to Acting Petty Officer (A.) in August 1943, appears to have been grounded around the same time, although his Flying Log Book ends with a couple of flights out of
Condor, Arbroath in March and July 1945.

Sold with the recipient’s original R.A.F. (Form 1767) Observer’s and Air Gunner’s Flying Log Book, with entries covering the period October 1941 to July 1945, and several copied photographs.
