Five: Private G. E. Mercer, Seaforth Highlanders, who died of wounds on 25 April 1915

George Edward Mercer was born in St. Peter’s, Lancashire and enlisted at Blackburn. Serving with the 2nd Battalion Seaforth Highlanders, he was one of about 35 men of the regiment who served in Somaliland as part of a Mounted Infantry Section. After leaving the Army he worked on the Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway.

He was called up from the Army Reserve in August 1914 and with the 2nd Battalion Seaforth Highlanders he entered the France/Flanders theatre of war on 15 September 1914. He died of wounds on 25 April 1915 and was buried in the Seaforth Cemetery, Cheddar Villa, West Vlaaderen, Belgium.
