John Monteith was born in Falkirk, Stirlingshire. A Moulder by occupation and a member of the 3rd Battalion Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders, he attested for full-time service on 28 October 1899. He served with them in South Africa, February 1900-October 1902 and in India, October 1902-October 1906. He was discharged as medically unfit on 20 November 1906. His medals were issued in 1927.
