Jonathan Barker was born on Wokingham, Berkshire. A Labourer by occupation, he attested for the Army at Reading on 4 November 1881, aged 20 years. Serving with the 1st Battalion Royal Berkshire Regiment he served in Egypt, September 1884-April 1885. Barker was severely wounded at Tofrek, 22 March 1885 - suffering a gunshot wound to the right thigh. Invalided to England, he was discharged as medically unfit for further service on 21 July 1885.

In 1911 Census he is recorded with his wife, three sons and one daughter, living at 22 Easthampstead Road, Wokingham. His occupation is listed as Brewers Drayman. His son, Robert Barker, was born in Wokingham in 1891.
