Provenance: Bought Baldwin 1964.

John McGuinness was born in 1828 in the Parish of Barony, Glasgow, and enlisted there on 18 August 1852, for 12 years. He embarked for India, accompanied by his wife, aboard the
Merchantman on 9 October 1852, and arrived at Bombay on 26 January 1853. Posted to 4th Company, 1st Battalion, Bombay Artillery, he took part in the Persian campaign of 1856-57. On 16 October 1857, he was transferred to the 4th Company, Reserve Battalion, which in 1860 or 1861 was retitled 4th Company, 3rd Battalion, Bombay Artillery. He volunteered for the British Army and transferred as Gunner on 10 May 1861, as part of 21st Brigade R.A. He served 7 months during the war in Abyssinia during 1867-68, and received his L.S. & G.C. medal in 1873 after 21 years service. He was discharged at his own request on 16 January 1872.
