John Nolan was born in 1830 at Kells, County Meath, and enlisted at Birmingham on 3 August 1855, for 12 years service. He embarked for India aboard the
Orwell on 25 August 1855, and arrived there on 20 December. He was posted to the 1st Company, 1st Battalion, Bombay Artillery, and served with that unit during the Persian War of 1856-57, where it was manning No. 3 Light Field Battery. He accepted his discharge in 1859 under G.G.O. 601 of 4 July 1859, and did not transfer to the British Army.

1st Company, 1st Battalion, Bombay Artillery, served in Persia as part of the 1st Division under Major-General Stalker. It took part in the landing at Hallila Bay and storming of Reshire, 9 December 1856, and the capture of Bushire, 10 December. Under Sir John Outram, it marched on the entrenched position of Borazgoon, 3-6 February, a distance of 46 miles covered in 41 hours in bad weather, and took part in the action at Khooshab on 8 February.
