John Whiteford Morrison was appointed an Ensign in the 79th Foot on 26 August 1807, aged 24 years, and promoted to Lieutenant on 17 August 1809. He served with the regiment in the Baltic, at Gottenburg, in 1808, at the battle of Corunna, and siege of Flushing, in 1809, and also at the siege of Burgos and battle of Salamanca, in 1812. He was removed on full pay to the 9th Royal Veteran Battalion on 26 October 1820, his health being ‘much impaired by long and severe service during a period of thirteen years, and having a large family and finding himself totally unfit for active service should the regiment be ordered abroad’.
