George Irwin, 43rd Foot, who served at Copenhagen in 1807, in every siege, storm and action in which the regiment was engaged in the Peninsula, and afterwards at New Orleans and the capture of Paris

Provenance: Recorded by Baldwin & Sons 1937; Spink, May 2002.

George Irwin was born in the Parish of Ballironey, near Rathfriland, County Down, and enlisted into the 43rd Foot at Limerick on 10 May 1805, aged 19 years 4 months, for unlimited service. He served a total of 17 years 109 days and was discharged at Fermoy on 26 August 1822, in consequence of ‘varicose veins with mark of old ulcer of left leg and worn constitution.’ He ‘served with the Regiment at the capture of Copenhagen in 1807, in General Moore’s retreat in 1809, and in every siege, storm and action in which the Regiment was engaged in the Peninsula, from the battle of the Coa, 24 July 1810, to the end of the war in the South of France. Served at New Orleans, America, was present at the capture of Paris and is strongly recommended for Pension.’ Irwin was admitted to an out-pension at the Royal Hospital, Kilmainham, on 25 September 1822.
