Provenance: Glendining, September 1908; Sotheby, February 1953.

Nathaniel Deighton/Dighton was born in the Parish of Oakingham, Berkshire, in 1789 and attested for the 40th Foot at Frome, Somerset, on 28 October 1807, aged 18 years, for unlimited service. He served a total of 15 years 40 days, including 2 years for Waterloo, and was discharged 6 December 1820, being ‘weakly and a bad marcher. He served in the Peninsula, North America and at Waterloo, and was severely wounded in the left foot at Badajoz on the 1st April 1811’. His claim for the clasp ‘Badajoz’ was disallowed, as participation in the first siege of that place did not qualify, as were those for ‘Salamanca’ and ‘Busaco’.

Sold with copied discharge papers.
