James Haslam was born at Bolton, Lancaster, and enlisted into the 2nd Battalion, 34th Foot, at Plymouth on 3 April 1809, aged 28, for unlimited service. He was discharged at Dublin in consequence of deafness and recommended for a pension at Royal Kilmainham Hospital - ‘he served with the Battn. during the whole of the campaigns in the Peninsula’.
