James Taylor was born in the Parish of Tickhill, York, and enlisted into the 2nd Battalion, 34th Foot, at Faversham, Kent on 18 April 1805, aged 27, for unlimited service. He had previously served in the Chatham division of the Royal Marines from October 1799 to May 1802. He was discharged at Clonmel on 3 May 1817, in consequence of the reduction of the battalion - ‘he served with the Battn. during the whole of the campaigns in the Peninsula and having been above fourteen years in the service is recommended for a pension’. Although discharged in the rank of Private, he had 10 years’ service in the rank of Sergeant.
