Samuel Tittle, 1st Foot or Royal Scots, who was taken prisoner in 1813 and later joined the 23rd Foot

Samuel Tittle was born in 1791 in the Parish of Delmore, Cheshire, and attested for the 1st Foot on 29 July 1808, and joined the 4th Battalion. He transferred to the 3rd Battalion in January 1813 and joined them in the Peninsula on 12 March. He was taken prisoner in July 1813, probably in the operations at St Sebastian, but rejoined the regiment sometime in September 1813, and was ‘sick’ until December of that year. He fought with the regiment at Waterloo and remained in France until December 1816, when he volunteered for transfer to the 23rd Foot. He served with the 23rd Foot in Ireland from 1819-23, being promoted to Corporal on 7 December 1819, and died in the Regimental Hospital at Sligo on 26 January 1823.
