Provenance: Sotheby, June 1884 and February 1886; Glendining, September 1990.

James Paterson/Patterson was born on 10 April 1775, in the Parish of Newlands, Glasgow. He enlisted into the 2nd Dragoons on 25 May 1811, a Tailor by trade, and served in Captain Payne’s Troop at the battle of Waterloo.
