Captain Charles Gordon Dowding, 87th Punjabis entered the East African theatre of war on 5 November 1915. mentioned in despatches and awarded the M.C. for his services in East Africa. Captain (Brigade Major) Dowding died of wounds on 17 November 1917, aged 28 years and was buried in the Dar es Salaam War Cemetery. He was the eldest son of the Rev. William Berkeley Dowding and Mrs M. Dowding, of Corston, Pembroke, South Wales.
