Walter Wilkinson was born in Bradford, West Yorkshire on 6 March 1879. He entered the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class on 20 January 1896 and was advanced to Boy 1st Class in April 1896. Serving on H.M.S. Centurion, February 1897-September 1901, he was promoted to Ordinary Seaman in March 1897 and to Able Seaman in March 1899. Wilkinson purchased his discharge on 23 July 1902. With copied service paper, roll extract and research on the battleship Centurion.
