George Samuel Cornish was born at Sheerness in August 1841 and trained as an Engineer at Keyham Factory before joining his first ship, H.M.S. Indus, in 1862. Present in operations off Abyssinia in 1867, as an Assistant Engineer aboard the Vigilant, he was advanced to 1st Class Engineer in March 1869, and was placed on the Retired List in August 1886. He died in May 1927.
