John Roberts was born in Festiniog, Merionethshire. A Dispenser by occupation, he attested for the Royal Welsh Fusiliers at Carnavon on 29 December 1885, aged 21 years. With them he served in India, December 1886-January 1894. Transferred to the Army Reserve in February 1894 and discharged in December 1897.
