Captain James Ker was mortally at the battle of Inkermann on 5 November 1854, and died two days later. ‘This gallant officer was hit on the thigh by a cannon-ball, and died shortly afterwards from the effects of amputation’ (Memoirs of the Brave, by James Gibson, 1855, refers).
