New Zealand 1845-66, reverse dated 1864 to 1866 (2883 John Martin, 68th Lt. Infty.) impressed naming, edge bruising, contact marks, good fine £500-600

John Martin was born in Castle Pollard, Co. Westmeath. He enlisted into the 69th Regiment at Portsmouth on 8 November 1847, aged 14 years. In 1857 he transferred to the 68th Regiment. Served overseas in Malta, Turkey and the Crimea, the East Indies and New Zealand. He was severely wounded in action at Te Ranga, New Zealand on 21 June 1864. Martin was discharged on 20 December 1872 having completed his second period of limited engagement while serving with the Militia. In addition to his New Zealand Medal he was awarded the Crimea Medal with four clasps, the Turkish Crimea Medal and one good conduct badge. His name had been entered 33 times in the defaulters book and he had once been tried by court martial. With copied discharge papers and roll extract.
