James Baggerley was born in the Parish of Harresby, Derbyshire, and enlisted for the Royal Marines at Derby on 28 September 1799, aged 17 years. He joined the Portsmouth Division and served in the 80th Company aboard H.M.S.
Stately at Egypt. He was discharged from the Royal Marines as a result of a brain injury on 22 February 1811. On 18 March 1812 he enlisted into the 6th Battalion, Royal Artillery, but was pensioned off on 23 October 1814, in consequence of reduction. Sold with copied discharge papers.
