Lloyd’s Medal for Saving Life at Sea, 1st large type, 73mm., bronze medallion (Mr Matthew Farran, Master of the Schooner “Eagle” of Liverpool, 27th of March 1850), die flaw to obverse at 11 o’clock, nearly extremely fine £260-300

‘The Honorary Bronze Medal to Mr M. Farran, Master of the schooner “Eagle”, of Liverpool, to mark the sense entertained of his humane and praiseworthy conduct towards 11 Moslems whom he met with in an open boat at sea, their vessel having foundered 12 days previously.’ (ref. General Meetings Minute Book, 3 April 1850).

Matthew Farran, a native of Cornwall, Master of the schooner
Eagle, en route from Braila and Constantinople, died of apoplexy on Malta on 4 January 1853. He was buried in the Manoel Island Cemetery, Malta.
