James Carter was born in Tullylish, Co. Down and attested for the 99th Foot at Lisburn on 22 February 1855. He was a Shoemaker by trade. During his 21 years in the Army, he served in the East Indies, China and the Cape of Good Hope as well as at home. He was discharged at the Curragh Camp on 7 June 1876 and gave his intended place of residence as Gilford, Co. Down.
With copy service papers and other research. Carter’s Long Service and Good Conduct Medal was issued on 17 May 1873 following a recommendation by his Commanding Officer. He received a £5 gratuity. Between 1870 and 1875 just 17 LSGCs were issued to the 99th Foot.
