James Cowan was born in Tranent, Haddingtonshire and lived and enlisted at Dalkeith. Serving with the 1st Battalion Cameron Highlanders, he entered the France/Flanders theatre of war on 10 March 1915. He was killed in action on 9 May 1915. Having no known grave, his name is commemorated on the Le Touret Memorial, France.
