At the outbreak of the war the 21st Lancers were stationed at Rawalpindi, India. As a regiment they saw no action in France; though they did see action on the N.W. Frontier during 1915-16. A Service Squadron was also formed and served in France in 1916-17. Nevertheless, a number of Depot and Reservist members of the Regiment earned the 1914 Star whilst attached to other units.

Private E. R. Cook, 21st Lancers, entered the France/Flanders theatre of war on 12 August 1914. He transferred to the Military Mounted Police in October 1916 and later became one of the first members of the Corps of Military Police when it was formed in 1926.

Research indicates he was one of only 4 other ranks of the 21st Lancers to be awarded the 1914 Star with clasp.
