At the outbreak of war the 20th Hussars were stationed at Colchester. They entered France on 18 August as part of the 5th Cavalry Brigade, 2nd Cavalry Division.

Private Thomas E. Everard, 20th Hussars, entered the France/Flanders theatre of war on 9 September 1914. He died of wounds, believed received during bombing practice, on 19 June 1915, aged 19 years. He was buried in the Longuenesse (St. Omer) Souvenir Cemetery. Private Everard was the son of Mary Everard, of Crimean Villa, Queen Street, Brentwood.
