At the start of the war the 10th Hussars were stationed at Potchefstroom, South Africa. They entered France on 8 October 1914 as part of the 6th Cavalry Brigade, 3rd Cavalry Division.

Private James Oakley served with the 7th Hussars in South Africa. He transferred to the 10th Hussars in 1903. With copied service papers (dark),m.i.c. and other research.
