At the outbreak of the war the 4th Hussars were stationed at the Curragh, Ireland. They entered France on 18 August 1914 as part of the 3rd Cavalry Brigade, 1st Cavalry Division.

David Thomas Newberry was born in Alverstoke, Hampshire in 1893. He served in the France/Flanders theatre of war from 15 August 1914 and was mentioned in despatches for his gallantry during the battle of the Aisne by Field Marshal French (
London Gazette 20 October 1914). He was listed as ‘presumed dead’ on 5 November 1914 - the war diary lists him as ‘wounded’ on that date. Having no known grave, his name is commemorated on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial.

With original slip to accompany the British War and Victory Medals, addressed to ‘Mr H. Newberry, 22 Coleridge Rd., Bristol’; together with copied gazette and war diary extracts, m.i.c. and other research.
