William Wallis was awarded the Liverpool Shipwreck and Humane Society’s Medal, in bronze, in respect of the rescue of four men from a capsized sailing boat in the Mersey on the evening of 26 July 1903 - so, too, 12 boys from the reformatory ship Akbar, who manned the boat - ‘the night was dark with a very strong flood tide running’, but the rescue was completed in about three quarters of an hour.
