Hamilton Willoughby was serving as Third Officer aboard the S.S. Ava when she was torpedoed and sunk by the U-45 south-west of Ireland on 26 January 1917, and was one of 92 people who lost their lives on the same occasion. Aged 28 years, he was the son of George and Agnes Willoughby of Southport, Lancashire, and is commemorated on the Tower Hill Memorial, London.
