M.M. London Gazette 12 April 1945. The recommendation for an immediate award states:

‘On 25 October 1944, No. 15 Platoon of ‘C’ Company, while advancing to attack Monte Casalino, suddenly came under very heavy enemy machine-gun fire which was holding up the advance of the Platoon. So Sepoy Saran Sing, on his own initiative and without awaiting orders from his Platoon Commander, rushed forward with his Bren gun to a position very close to the enemy and from which he was immediately able to give covering fire. Immediately the enemy diverted much of their fire on to Sepoy Saran Sing who, completely disregarding the danger to which he was exposed, kept up a steady rate of fire on the enemy position until his platoon had pushed forward. Later, when the Company Commander ordered the Platoon to withdraw under a smoke screen, Sepoy Saran Sing kept up firing until the whole platoon had withdrawn, and was himself the last man to leave the position. Throughout the whole action Sepoy Saran Sing, first by his complete disregard for his own safety in drawing the enemy fire onto his own head, and later by covering the whole withdrawal of the Platoon, showed the utmost bravery, and undoubtedly saved many casualties.’
