United States of America, Visit of Edward, Prince of Wales, to the United States, 1919, a silver medal by J. Flanagan for the American Numismatic Society, uniformed bust of the Prince of Wales right, plumes in field to right, reverse female figure of Columbia standing on a dais, arms raised in welcome, an eight line inscription in field before her, 63mm (Baxter 160; Attwood, The Medal 23, p.37, fig. 3; BHM 4136; E 1968). Edge knock at eleven o’clock, otherwise very fine and lightly polished, scarce; in fitted case (£80-120)

The visit of the Prince (later Edward VIII) to Canada and the USA in 1919 was the first of his highly successful foreign tours. He visited President Woodrow Wilson on his sick-bed and the grave of Theodore Roosevelt. At the culmination of the visit he staged a reception on HMS Renown where he was presented with a unique gold medal (now in the Mohamed Al Fayed collection); the designer, John Flanagan (1865-1952) and the famous numismatist Edward T. Newell, president of the ANS, were present
