Romania, The 55th Anniversary of the Romanian Communist Party, 1976, bronze medals by J. Grudinsche (2), viz. bust of Nicolae Ceausescu left, reverse legend in eight lines, and bust of Elena Ceausescu left, reverse similar, both 60mm [2]. Extremely fine; first in blue fitted card box of issue (£20-30)

Nicolae Ceausescu (1918-1989) became secretary-general of the Romanian Communist party in 1965. He was elected president of the state council in 1967 and president of the republic in 1974, but through the 1980s his regime became increasingly repressive. After he brutally tried to crush protests against his rule, he was overthrown and executed, along his wife Elena, on 25 Dec. 1989
