France, Normandy Millennium, 1911, a plated bronze plaque by A.-E. Guilloux for A. Bazor, standing figure of Rollon holding sword, prows of longboats behind, reverse aerial view of Rouen, 70 x 48mm (PBE 477; cf. DNW 47, 902). Extremely fine, rare; in original maroon fitted case (£40-50)

Alphonse-Eugène Guilloux (1852-1939), sculptor from Rouen who became Professor at the École des Beaux-Arts in the city. Rollon (†931), a pirate of Norwegian extraction, occupied Rouen and Normandy, subsequently making peace with Charles the Simple in 911 and becoming the first Duke of Normandy
