William I (1066-1087), Penny, Two Stars type, Sandwich, Ælfget, ielfgt on siindp, linear inner circle, no pellets by neck, obverse legend pillem rex ani, 1.16gm (Harris, SCMB 1986, p.374, item h [= Lockett 3854, different dies]; BMC –, but recorded in table of moneyers on p.ccxxxiv from the Hunterian Museum specimen [= SCBI 53, 100]; N 845; S 1254). Has been repaired, otherwise very fine and toned, extremely rare (£200-300)

The cataloguer has traced a total of eight examples, one in the Hunterian Museum (original William Hunter collection, 1.18gm, die-axis 9h), the six from the so-called ‘War Area’ find of 1914 which include the specimens formerly in the Lockett (lot 3854 [= BNJ 1915, pl.iv, 3] now in the British Museum) and Elmore Jones (lot 1310) collections, all of which were reported as having pellets by the king’s neck, and the present coin, the die-axis of which is 12h.
