Lt-Col Alfred Paget Humphrey MVO, DL, JP (1850-1916), was a leading figure in the world of competitive shooting. He won the Queen's Prize at Wimbledon in 1871 and twice represented Great Britain against the United States. He was the author of First Hints on Rifle Shooting, 1876. He was born in Cambridge, the son of a physician and a prominent university lecturer. In 1881 he established the Humphrey Challenge Cup, a year after the competition was begun in 1880. The Elcho Shield was established by Lord Elcho and competed for between English and Scottish volunteer regiments. Designed by a Mr. Caley, the winning recipients received individual silver copies. The first match, held on Wimbledon Common on 9 July 1862, was won by England and Humphrey was a member of the winning team in 1872. Further photocopied research sold with the lot; see also Lot 1406
