Commemorative, Historical and Art Medals

Manchester & Liverpool & Royal North Lancashire Agricultural Society [Founded 1874], a silver award medal, farmyard scene with cattle, sheep and hay wagon, rev. wreath, engraved (Sept., Awarded to Mr Henry Julian, Bolton, For Park Pheaton [sic] Exhibited at Stalybridge), 48mm. Very fine and deeply toned; with silver rim and ornate suspension ring and an interesting Titanic association £200-300

Henry Julian, a coach builder, moved from Cork to Bolton in about 1874 and at the time of the 1881 census was living at 8 Back of the Bank, Little Bolton. One of his sons, Henry Forbes Julian, born in 1861, was to become a respected metallurgical engineer, working abroad on many projects and in many countries, and in that capacity was travelling First Class on the Titanic (on a £26 ticket, in cabin E60). His body was never recovered, but his memorial in the church of St. Mary Magdalene, Upton, Torquay, states “He was amongst those who gave their lives for others in the disaster which befell the RMS TITANIC”
