Died on 17 November 1899, of wounds received at Talana on 20 October 1899. He is buried next to the Swedish Mission Church in Dundee.

The following extract is taken from a letter published in the Regimental Chronical 1924 by Col-Sgt. E. Clarke: ‘After a short breathing space we were ordered to advance across an open space and make for the cover of an open wood at the bottom of the hill. On reaching the wood I found Rifleman Oliver of my section had been hit and we could see the bullets kicking up the dust where he lay wounded in the open. Bugler Hearley and myself at once ran back, picked him up and brought him under cover of the wood, where we handed him over to some stretcher bearers.’ See Lot 69 for the medals to Bugler Hearley.
