John Tapper was born at Brixham, Devon, and enlisted for the 90th Light Infantry under the false name of Turner in July 1864, aged 23 years. In June 1869 he transferred to the 60th Royal Rifles, serving in Afganistan 1878-80, and Natal during the First Boer War from January 1881 to January 1882. He was awarded his L.S. & G.C. medal in March 1883, was promoted to Lance-Corporal in October 1883, and discharged in July 1885.
