Alexander Livingstone was commissioned Cornet in the 12th Light Dragoons on 9 May 1800, and served with the regiment in Egypt 1801. He transferred to the Life Guards in April 1803, and in August 1805 transferred to the 60th Royal Rifles, attaining the rank of Captain. He served at the reduction of the island of Martinique in 1809 and subsequently proceeded with the 5th battalion of his regiment to the Peninsula. He was severely wounded in the assault and storming of the fortress of Ciudad Rodrigo on the night of 19 January, 1812. His wounds necessitated the amputation of one arm, for which he was granted a pension of one hundred pounds per annum, commencing 20 January 1813. In May 1813 he was posted to a Garrison Battalion in which he served until he retired in 1826.
