A Great War M.M. group of three awarded to Second Lieutenant H. J. Grace, Northamptonshire Regiment - awarded the M.M. for the battle of Thiepval Ridge, 26 September 1916

Private Herbert James Grace entered the France/Flanders theatre of war with the Bedfordshire Regiment before transferring to the 6th Battalion Northamptonshire Regiment. With them he earned the Military Medal for his bravery in the field during the attack and capture of Thiepval on 26 September 1916. On 11 September 1918 he was commissioned into the Northamptonshire Regiment. Post war he lived at 53 Cross Oak Road, Berkhamsted, Hertfordshire.

With copied gazette and war diary extracts, m.i.c. and other research, including a report of the part played by the 6th Battalion in the capture of Thiepval which includes a list of officers and other ranks (including Grace) whose names were brought forward ‘for special acts of gallantry or devotion to duty’.
