Alfred Granville Burne Turner was born in 1866, third son of General Sir Frank Turner, K.C.B., Royal Artillery. He was educated at Judde House Tonbridge, Felsted School and the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst. Commissioned into the Devonshire Regiment in 1887, he transferred to the Indian Staff Corps in 1889. Appointed a Squadron Officer in the 13th Bengal Lancers in 1891. With them he served on the North West Frontier of India and then in China. Promoted to Captain in 1898; Major in 1905 and Lieutenant-Colonel in 1913. During the Great War he served in Mesopotamia, 1 June 1916-12 October 1918. Was Commandant, Section of Defences, Tigris Lines of Communication. Graded as A.Q.M.G. until November 1917, then as A.A.G. (Class X). For his services in the war he was three times mentioned in despatches and awarded the D.S.O. Lieutenant-Colonel Turner retired in September 1919. Latterly living in Little London, Sussex, he died on 20 September 1948. With copied gazette extracts and other research.
