William Cantrell was born in and enlisted at Sheffield and initially served in the York and Lancaster Regiment. Serving in the 9th Battalion Royal Scots, he was killed in action, France/Flanders, on 1 August 1918, aged 20 years. Having no known grave, his name is commemorated on the Soissons Memorial. He was the son of Tom Cantrell, of 11 Ebury Street, Newhall Road, Sheffield.
